Sandra Kipis has been a photographer most of her life. Her curiosity for image making blossomed at the early age of seven when she got a plastic camera from Grand and Toy Stationery. Her father helped her load the then popular 127 film rolls, and off she went to take black and white images of her playgrounds. Sandra quickly discovered her father’s 35mm camera and taught herself to use his homemade darkroom during her adolescent years. After graduating from high school, she studied applied photography at Sheridan College of Applied Arts and Technology and continued to the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Here she explored several photographic formats that ranged from plastic cameras to 4x5 view cameras. She landed her first full time photographic job shooting colour transparencies for ATV/CTV in electronic field production . She became the second camerawoman hired to shoot news in the company's history. After almost fifteen years as a news videographer she has returned to her passion of still photography full time.
